Blues Through Despite Defeat

The Blues qualified for the last 16 of the Champions League despite losing 1-0 to Werder Bremen in the Weserstadion.

Per Mertesacker headed the only goal of the game midway through the first half to set up a final game decider against Barcelona in two weeks' time.Jose Mourinho's side were not at their best against a team currently second in the Bundesliga and also suffered a blow when Didier Drogba limped out of the action just before the hour mark.

After the match Chelsea captain John Terry said: "We came here to win the game. If we'd come to lose we'd have sent the reserves. But we owe it to the fans.

"We put in a performance but without getting the result - but we're through.

"We wanted to come here and win and make sure and not depend on other results or goal differences.

"It's disappointing to concede goals like that but we must work on that for the future. I thought we soaked up a load of their pressure but it's still disappointing.

"It's disappointing to lose a game going into a big one (against Manchester United). It's the same for both of us now.

"We have lots of strong characters and we'll see how we bounce back on Sunday."
